Officer Dick Downey's Pot Report
We’re cruising the beat a few days ago when this middle-aged guy steps off the sidewalk and into the road, waving us down in a panic. We pull over...
Me: What seems to be the problem, sir?
Citizen: [Poking his head in my driver’s side window] I was driving on 294 South yesterday, and I saw two cars racing and speeding.
Citizen:And, they were driving like maniacs and I have their plate numbers. [Reading off a scrap of paper] The black car was 897-4587 and the blue car was 399-3922.
Citizen: Aren’t you going to do anything about it?
Me: Sir, exactly what do you want me to do?
Citizen: Well, they broke the law, didn’t they?!
Me: Sir, they may have broken the law, but unless an officer witnesses the act, we can’t take any action.
Citizen: But I SAW them! Isn’t that good enough?!
Me: No sir, you’re not a police officer. We can’t arrest someone based solely on a witness statement.
Citizen: Lots of other people saw them too! What am I supposed to do? Record it on video?! I was DRI-VING!
Me: Sir, please; calm down.
Citizen: I gave you their plate numbers. Can’t you just look up their damn addresses and go put a little fear into them?!
Me: Sir, I’m not going to do that.
Citizen: Is THIS what my tax dollars go towards?!! I pay YOUR salary, damn it! You’ve got some nerve treating the public that you’re supposed to serve and pro-
Me: All right, sir. Calm down. Tell you what. Let me see if I can get someone to help you out.
Citizen: Good! I’ve had enough of you wasting my time!
Me: [I look over at my partner] Hey Jimmy, you want to help this guy out?
Me: Sorry, sir. Jimmy doesn’t want to help you. Have a nice day.
And as we drove away, I could see this screaming figure running after our cruiser and then disappear into the horizon.
